Job hunting now is becoming far too similar to dating for my taste. Lots of putting yourself out there and receiving a variety of random responses generally from people who you weren’t so into anyway. Instead of wearing my cutest outfit, I talk myself up as much as possible in a cheesy cover letter. Oddly enough, I have actually been asked for my picture by a few prospective employers. Do I...

This weekend the Foxy Pompoms crew hosted a baby shower to welcome our first kit into our pack. I baked super girly pink chocolate cupcakes and a delicious red velvet cake with a hand painted baby fox on it. It took forever, but it was well worth the effort.  Dominated the baby shower games, winning 5 of the 8. Since I was co-hosting and attempting to be a better sport than usual, I only took...

Did a little time traveling when I subbed for my ex-roommate’s 6th grade class today. It’s always an odd feeling to go back to where you came from. Everything seems different but the same, and just a tiny bit smaller than when you last saw it. This school is the only place I felt at home when I first moved to LA. But it was a bubble that I lived in for 9 years. My job transformed into...

The request initially said “KIPP LA would like to schedule a time to speak with you to get to know you better.”  Except that get to know you better (to them) means:  1) Do you have access to your students’ CST scores from your entire teaching career? How many of them were proficient or advanced?  2) How would you define “at-risk”?  3) How can we solve the problem...

Everything is better in moderation. For the past month, I was working 12-18 hours a day with the subbing and the tutoring and then the subsequent lesson planning and grading. Since I had no time to waste, I was way more productive that way. This week, I have had an abundance of free time. I’ve been tutoring in the afternoons and applying to jobs galore. I even interviewed and...

Of course, “celebrities” and “fictional characters” are actually the same thing.

I love Jimmy Fallon. He’s goofy, smart, sweet, sarcastic, charming and yet geeky and awkward all at the same time. I still can’t believe he managed to convince the Roots to be his house band, but it’s great to see them every night. Tonight he finished up “Perm Week” and the guy had a perm so hilarious, it almost made me spit out my drink. Adam Sandler is on his show...

Ms. G is on hiatus since the high school teaching gig is done which means that I spent Wednesday night at three different bars drinking wine, far too many happy hour margaritas, and a mystery shot. The liquid courage got me through tipsy versions of “Regulate”, “Poison” and “Blister in the Sun” at Brass Monkey. Everyone else had work this morning so I...

Today was possibly my last day at the charter high school where I’ve been subbing for the past month. I was going to head home after dropping off my student files and talking to the possibly permanent English teacher but they asked me to sub for Biology. Here are a few of my students’ words and thoughts from today. “Can you adopt me? I only have 2 years left till I’m 18...

C'est la vie
I just got a text message that my subbing gig is over as of tomorrow afternoon. That pretty much summarizes how professional this charter school and their staff is. I’m relieved and overjoyed as this was clearly not the subject or school for me though a little sad since there were a few kids there who I truly enjoyed working with.  In the meantime, I applied as a mentor for the young...

The purpose of this week’s biography project was twofold-to see if letting them make their own choices for once would motivate them to do a research project and also, because I knew the spectrum of their choices would at least make grading them a lot more fun.  Things I learned today:  1) Jimi Hendrix pretended he was gay to get discharged from the army.  2) According to one...

I wish I could be a teacher robot with a preset appropriate reaction when stuff like this happens because this human version of me tends to laugh and/or make sarcastic remarks that may be equally inappropriate.  Student: (Walks into the room and starts dancing with me. I stand perfectly still but a smile escapes). Ms. G, I just wanted to let you know that you are officially going to be my...
